A diet that is written only to be followed for a short time is called categorized as one of the fad diets.  Another popular culture meaning for the term is a diet that becomes wildly popular for a period of a few months to a few years, and then fades into obscurity. Examples include the grapefruit diet, the South Beach diet, and Jenny Craig.

Fad diets are sometimes known as food fad-ism. A food fad is a phenomenon in which some food or category of food suddenly becomes very popular. These generally have some common elements, including:

-    The food, or some ingredient within it, is thought to have amazing powers.
-    Some foods must be avoided because they have equally amazing powers, but that do bad things.

The Atkins diet displays the characteristics of one of these fad diets. In this diet carbohydrates are the Keystone element that is negative and therefore to be avoided. At the same time, carbohydrates are the miraculous element — actually the lack of carbohydrates because it creates a metabolic state in which the body burns fat at an amazing pace.  This diet had a number of short periods of extreme carbohydrate avoidance, followed by long periods of sustainable low carbohydrate eating. However, many people are able to continue the Atkins diet for years.

As with many fad diets Atkins rose quickly and fell just as quickly. For a number of years anyone who thought of dieting thought about the Atkins diet .  People from Hollywood actors to politicians were all on the Atkins diet. But after the death of Dr. Atkins, the diet became much less of a household word.

Fad diets can be unhealthy.  The Subway diet made popular in television commercials wasn’t exempt. At its center was a young man named Jared who had lost hundreds of pounds in only a year by eating Subway sandwiches. Jared’s diet was severe — going down to 900 calories a day from over 10,000.  Such an extreme level of caloric intake cuts and rapid weight loss is unhealthy. The diet did include many positive aspects such as exercise, like walking.
